This from The Dubya Report. An exact quote from then candidate George Bush:
This is an impressive crowd, the haves and the have-mores. Some people call you the elite. I call you my base.
I was looking for an article I recall from years ago (I only heard allusions to it, never saw the real thing) about Geo. Bush pére ordering brandy in a workingmen's bar, but instead found this, ascribing the gaffe to Sargent Shriver.

On the one hand, it underscores the fact that we do have an aristocracy in this country and they're largely out of touch with what regular folks have to deal with on a daily basis. The dirty little secret is that both parties are well-represented in those circles. They have more in common with each other than with us . . .
Posted by: paul at February 13, 2004 08:33 PMYeah.. there are quotes on the site that do a much better job of revealing President Bush's lack of intelligence but this particular quote just struck a nerve.
I believe every President since FDR has been a millionaire. I was reading on one site about how Bush made his personal fortune of $20 million. It looks like it was handed to him on a plate. He failed in every business he tried but Dad's friends bailed him out and he made money every time. Stunning what can happen when you're born with a silver spoon in your mouth.
Posted by: stefan at February 13, 2004 08:49 PMGW is my kind of guy, showing excellent taste in his selection of parents.
As the blue collar voter said to JFK when he learned that Kennedy had never done a day of work in his life: "Let me tell you son, you haven't missed a thing".
The best way to get rich is to choose your parents well. Why resent the guy for his superior skill?
Posted by: Genghis Khan at February 17, 2004 12:58 PMI don't think I resent his wealth (though I would love to have some of it myself). It's more his hypocrisy in pretending to be "jess folks" when representing himself to the electorate.
But then, if I was honest, I would have to resent the hypocrisy of just about every candidate, wouldn't I?
