basic rules of moving

There are some basic rules of moving I've learned over as many moves as I have years:

  • Pack the stereo last.

  • Unpack the stereo first.

  • Get lots of friends to help at both ends.

  • Beer makes everyone work harder.

  • Pack small boxes heavy, big boxes light.

  • Plan for breakage

  • Pack all your essentials in one or two boxes and label as such. Carry them with you if necessary to keep them in sight.

  • Pack valuables carefully in just a couple of boxes. Pad very well and keep them in sight if at all possible.

  • Get an binding estimate "guaranteed not to exceed" if you're using professionals.

  • Packing well takes 3-4 times longer than unpacking. Plan for it.
